- Carey's subtle yet surprising EP, Hoyas is a hospitable statement about love, longing and the celebration of knowing it well. Here you will find the familiar S. Carey modern classical repetition pushed into the vernacular of electronic music and beat making. Simply, this is the warmest electronic music you'll ever meet. 'Hoyas sounds like a soundtrack for an ice-slicked, insomniac winter drive.'
Reviews and scores for Music involving S. Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Astronautalis form band, record album. Bon Iver wins two Grammys, and 'Bonny Bear' is born. Sean Carey has been a key component of Bon Iver's live presence for years.

S. Carey Hoyas Ep Rar Online
, a reference to the Sierra Nevada as once described by naturalist John Muir. Best known as Sean Carey, the drummer and multi-instrumentalist of Bon Iver, his newest solo album was released in April and is the follow up to 2012’s Hoyas EP and his 2010 debut LP, All We Grow. S. Carey’s sound is remarkably picturesque – inseparable from the scenes of nature that it’s inspired by. His hushed vocals provide the backdrop to lush soundscapes, producing something intricately minimalistic. Range of Light serves as the perfect soundtrack for one to listen to outside, preferably somewhere of equal beauty.I had the pleasure of speaking with Carey during his current tour with The Pines. Read on for the interview and enter for your chance to win tickets to his show at the Independent in San Francisco this Saturday. By Brett Leader.
How has the tour been going so far?
SC: It’s going good. It’s the usual west coast thing. I love it. I love the cities. I love the scenery, but the drives are really long. It wears you down a little bit, but the weather’s been amazing.
In terms of performance, what are you doing differently on this tour than in the past?
SC: We travel with our own lights and we’re doing these projections. It’s more of a show in that the projections just make it that much moodier. That’s a big difference. Also having a new pool of songs to choose from is really nice.
You invited fans to submit video to be used in the projections as well, right?
SC: Yeah, we’re using a couple of new ones and some we’re using from when we started. It was a way to get people involved. But some of the projections that we made just sort of stuck with the songs.
How would you compare the sound of Range of Light to All We Grow?
SC: I think that it has some of the same sentiment to All We Grow and there are some similarities in the songs, but overall I think it’s a lot more refined and more produced and more thought out. All We Grow was a little bit more instinctual where some of the parts and even some of the lyrics came from more of an improvisational place, whereas Range of Light is a lot more deliberate – musically and lyrically. I included my touring band throughout almost all of the recording, so that was a little bit different and I think it turned out for the best. A few of the songs they really helped me figure out where I needed to go and took it to a place where I wouldn’t have imagined the song going.
What changes in your life occurred between the albums that influenced your music?
SC: A lot of stuff has happened. I’ve had a lot of different experiences touring with Bon Iver and experiences in the studio and learning more and more about how to make a record and how to make it good and how to write a song better and all of those things. That’s been a definite learning and growing experience from the first record to now. The songs kind of have a wide spectrum of where they come from. Some go back all the way to my childhood. Also I had a baby last year, so that was a huge change in my life. Some of the songs are about that experience, especially leading up to it.
Was “Alpenglow” one of those songs?
SC: Yeah, that’s definitely one of those baby songs [laughs]. I wrote it the summer before my daughter was born. I just started looking back on my relationship with my wife and where we started from. Each verse is that journey from meeting her to getting married and then having a baby.
Nature clearly plays a crucial role in your music – could you talk about that relationship?
SC: It’s just kind of a thing that’s always been a part of me. I grew up in nature, doing a lot of hiking, fishing, and camping. It’s just a part of my life that I need. I need to be outside and I need to be in the quiet. I need that to recharge. So it’s kind of this constant source of inspiration. It’s something that comes naturally to write about in that way, so it’s always intertwined in my lyrics.

Which artists have influenced your sound?
SC: A lot of people, obviously. I think every artist that you listen to sneaks in there, but what’s coming to mind is Sufjan Stevens, Sigur Rós, Steve Reich, Talk Talk, Califone, Sam Amidon, and what else? …I could go on for a while. [laughs]
Who are you currently listening to?
SC: I’ve been listening to a lot of Loney, Dear. They’re from Sweden -- really good.
What would be your dream collaboration?
SC: I think I would have to go with David Bazan. I’ve just always been into him since I was about 13 or 14. I think he’s a really interesting songwriter and also just a really great arranger in sort of a rock band kind of way. The parts that he writes for drums and guitar and bass -- it all sort of just works.

What’s next for S. Carey? Where else do you want to take the project musically?
SC: Maybe doing some film scores. That would be really cool and I think my sound would work in movies. That could be a really interesting, creative process.
Any filmmakers in particular that you would like to work with or any films that you could see your music being in?
SC: Every once in a while, I see something and think “This should have been me.” I think documentaries would be cool. I love Wes Anderson films. I don’t know if that would work exactly, but maybe it could. Anything that’s really vibey and dreamy.
Maybe if Wes Anderson directed a Planet Earth?
SC: Yeah, I don’t know if I could ever do a whole film of his -- they’re a little too zany, but his films are amazing.

How is performing your solo material different to performing in Bon Iver?
SC: It’s different being the front man, but both things are really fun and rewarding – just in different ways.
How has being a member of Bon Iver for the past seven years influenced your solo material?
SC: I think it has hugely influenced it – just all of the experiences that it’s given me and exposed me to. That first tour we did two months in the U.S. I was fresh out of college. Justin and Mikey played music that I’d never heard before. That really influenced me and made me want to do my own thing.
